Emily Fujita, 11, a Waiakea Intermediate sixth-grade student, was recently selected to be the 2013 Youth Honoree for the Arthritis Foundation Hawaii Branch.

Fujita traveled to Honolulu to be introduced to the Board of Directors and to speak at the annual Arthritis Walk Kick Off Breakfast.

The Arthritis Foundation Hawaii Branch will host an Arthritis Walk at Kakaako Waterfront Park on May 5 to raise funds and awareness to fight the nation’s leading cause of disability.

On Feb. 13, Fujita met Rep. Richard Onishi and Sen. Gil Kahele at the state Legislature. There she was presented with a signed and framed proclamation.

Fujita was recognized on both the House and Senate floors and the proclamation, which outlines the mission and vision of

the Arthritis Foundation, was read in its entirety.

Fujita has suffered with the effects of juvenile arthritis since she was 18 months old. She will be walking in this year’s Arthritis Walk and invites the Big Island community to support the Arthritis Foundation’s work.
